Addicted Ignorance…

So, since quitting smoking, then starting, quitting, starting, quitting (yes, this has been an ongoing problem) I have been thinking a lot about addiction and issues of the like. Here are the results of my heavy concentration and occassional one-track mindedness.

anger pulsing,
in my head a beat box
cacophony raging unchecked
behind narrowed vision,
half blind as desire
takes over,
well-being tossed out
to proverbial curb, forgotten
left for death in festering gutters
next to homeless drunks passed out upon
soaked sheets of week old New York Times
ever appearing dead as sun creeps ever higher,
passed out next to my better judgment
now slathered in yellow puke
and green sewer slime
while I am off feeding addiction
needed to temper my bubbling rage,
the lava building slowly subsides,
failing to explode… today…
but what of tomorrow?
or the next?

Even though it’s more than 20 years since the final, successful, time I gave up smoking, it’s remembering the agonies that keeps me from ever starting again. Your poem expresses the feelings perfectly.

It’s a hard poem to read — likely because it’s real. Well done.

wow. addiction is a tough deal…you paint in vivid words…and i like the structure as well, which seems to be rising like smoke from the cigarette of you tag at the end….best of wishes on quitting…it certainly is not easy.

i didn’t even notice that but you’re right! initially, as I wrote it, i wanted the structure to pulse in reflection of the first line, but i like your visual better! 🙂

Addiction is a terrible thing, and you express the rage and frustration well.

  9. September 15, 2010 at 6:03 am

This was so tight and taut and expressed addiction’s dark underbelly perfectly.

Tormenting but then there is one track mind too..Like the anguish and frustration in the poem…

If it’s not smoking, it’s something else. In order to stay healthy, be responsible, make the best use of talent we have to really discipline ourselves. It’s always fall down 8, get up 9 it seems. You beautifully explored the mind’s devices to keep oneself in check. Really well written. Thanks for posting. Gay (@beachanny)

Gosh.,..this was intense! I feel for you, my friend.. Wonderfully expressed are the frustrations and falls!! Whoa!!
Well, to rise, one needs to trip and fall indeed! But rise, one will..
    Best wishes for everything!!

    But please…please do keep writing!!

    Wordle! Love it.

I used to be a smoker — I LOVED smoking, oh my god. I LOVED it. Not sure what finally did it for me except that I started thinking about dying all the time. Cheery, huh? Good luck. I like your work.
